The Club has recently purchased 2 wayfares and 3 lasers for the 2007 season plus we have a fleet of private boats (for lesson access only) including 25 foot C&C and a 22 foot Catalina.
To use our Lasers or Wayfarers, initially in wind speeds of 4-9 knots (8-16 km/hr), you must confidently demonstrate the equivalent afloat skills up to CYA White Sail III.
We've purchased a 18' catamaran and since sailing these are more difficult, we will require you to be checked out on this boat.
CYA Basic Cruising allows you to sail up to 6-10 meter Keel Boats, which also have motors or engines, in familiar waters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.
You can also challenge these CYA levels if you wish, without taking formal courses, if you have sailing experience. All you need to do is demonstrate the appropriate skills on the checklists. There is a formal written exam for CYA Basic Cruising but for White Sail it is demonstrating all skills on the checklists (www.sailing.ca/training/cbet/documents/WIIIChecklist.doc). Purchasing or borrowing the appropriate CYA text is beneficial in studying for this. |
